Marking & Interpreting Scales for decimals, fractions and mass (weight) is commonly tested in 11+ and Selective School exams in the UK.


Example Question 1:

What number is the arrow pointing to?

Answer: 9.8

Explanation: There are five sub-divisions between each whole number which means that each small line must be worth 0.2 of a whole number.

Example Question 2:

What measurement is the arrow pointing to on this measuring cylinder?

Answer: 24ml

Explanation: Each 10ml mark is divided into 5 equal sections of 2ml.
