Maths Topic 24 - Measurement: Metric and imperial units of measurement and calculations for length, mass, volume and capacity

Measurement: Metric and imperial units of measurement and calculations for length, mass, volume and capacity are commonly tested in 11+ and Selective School exams in the UK.

Examples

Example Question 1:

Convert the following measurements into cm. (a) 2km,  (b) 0.7m,  (c) 7.03m

Answers: (a) 200,000cm,  (b) 70cm,   (c) 703cm

Explanations

(a) There are 100,000cm in 1km, so 2km = 200,000cm

(b) 0.7m is 7/10 of a metre (100cm = 1m) = 70cm

(c) 7.03m is 7 complete metres (100cm = 1m) = 700cm plus 0.03m which is 3/100 of a metre = 3cm. Add them together = 703cm

Example Question 2:

What is the volume of this cuboid?

Answer: 420cm³

Explanation: length 14cm × width 5cm × height 6cm = 420cm³
