Examples
Example Question 1:
(a) 3/4 + 1/3 = ?
(b) 1/2 − 3/8 = ?
Answers: (a) 1 1/12 , (b) 1/8
Explanations:
(a) Make the denominators the same by changing them to twelfths: 3/4 (× 3) = 9/12 , 1/3 (× 4) = 4/12 → 9/12 + 4/12 = 13/12 → 1 1/12
(b) Make the denominators the same by changing the ½ to eighths: 4 ⁄8 − 3⁄8 = 1/8
Example Question 2:
(a) 4/5 × 2/3 = ?
(b) 8/9 ÷ 2/3 = ?
Answers: (a) 8/15 , (b) 1 1/3
Explanations:
(a) To multiply fractions you just multiply across the numerators and then do the same with the denominators: 4 × 2 = 8 and 5 × 3 = 15 → 8/15
(b) To divide fractions you keep the first fraction the same, invert the second fraction and multiply instead of divide: 8/9 × 3/2 = 24/18 simplify → 1 1/3
Example Question 3:
What is 5/8 of 416?
Answer: 260
Explanation: Find 1/8 by dividing 416 by 8 = 52, then multiply this by 5 to find 5/8
