Standard Arithmetic: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, long multiplication & division is commonly tested in 11+ exams and Selective Tests in the UK.
Examples
Example Question 1:
Addition
57 + 62 + 43 = ?
Answer: 162
Explanation: The easiest way of doing this sum is by partitioning the numbers and first adding the units 7 + 2 + 3 = 12, then add the tens 50 + 60 + 40 = 150, finally add both of those answers together 12 + 150 = 162
Example Question 2:
Subtraction
6985 – 4563 = ?
Answer: 2422
Explanation: 5 − 3 units = 2, 8 − 6 tens = 2, 9 − 5 hundreds = 4 and 6 − 4 thousands = 2
Example Question 3:
Multiplication
46 x 23 = ?
Answer: 1058
Explanation: Either partition the numbers to multiply or complete a long multiplication sum. 46 × 20 = 920 and 46 ×3 = 138, then add those answers together = 1058
Example Question 4:
Division
744 ÷ 24 = ?
Answer: 31
Explanation: Either first reduce both numbers by dividing them by the same divisor 744 ÷ 8 = 93 and 24 ÷ 8 = 3 which gives you another chance to reduce them further by dividing both the 93 and 3 by 3. 93 ÷ 3 = 31 and 3 ÷ 3 = 1, giving the answer of 31.
Or do a long division calculation 744 ÷ 24. 74 ÷ 24 = 3, remainder 2 and 24 ÷ 24 = 1, giving the answer of 31.
