Writing Numbers as Words & Figures

This maths skill is commonly tested in 11+ exams and Selective School exams in the UK.

Examples

Example Question 1:

Write the following numbers as figures:

1) number six million, two hundred and three thousand and twenty-eight 

2)  ninety thousand,  six hundred and twenty-two 

3)  two hundred and thirteen million, four hundred and five thousand and seven 

Answers:

1) 6, 203, 028

2) 90,622

3) 213, 405, 007

Explanations:

1) units of millions = 6/hundred of thousands = 2/tens of thousands = 0/units of thousands = 3/hundreds = 0/tens = 2/units = 8

2) units of millions = 0/hundred of thousands = 0/tens of thousands = 9/units of thousands = 0/hundreds = 6/tens = 2/units = 2

3) hundreds of millions = 2/tens of millions = 1/units of millions = 3/hundred of thousands = 4/tens of thousands = 0/units of thousands = 5/hundreds = 0/tens = 0/units = 7

Example Question 2:

Write the following numbers as words:

1) 7, 456, 034

2) 50, 090

3) 250, 802

Answers: 

1) seven million, four hundred and fifty-six thousand and thirty-four

2) fifty thousand and ninety

3) two hundred and fifty thousand, eight hundred and two

Explanations: 

1) seven million = 7 + four hundred and fifty-six thousand  = 456  + thirty-four = 34  → 7, 456, 034

2) fifty thousand  = 50 + 0 hundreds + ninety = 90 → 50, 090

3) two hundred and fifty thousand = 250 + eight hundred and two = 802 → 250, 802
