English Topic 34 - Similes & Metaphors


Similes are a way of comparing one thing with another e.g. As blind as a bat. They will use the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ to compare.


He is as strong as an ox.

You are as cunning as a fox.

I slept like a log after working hard all day.

My little brother is as busy as a bee in school.


Metaphors are another way of comparing one thing with another. A metaphor says one thing is another thing e.g. You’re such an angel. They do not use the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.


He is a shining star in class.

The child is the apple of her eye.

Receiving that prize is the icing on the cake.

She is the black sheep of the family.
