English Topic 17 - Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences are commonly tested in 11 plus exams.

Sentences that use ‘if’ are called conditional sentences as there is some degree of uncertainly and the result may be conditional on something/somebody. Conditional sentences often use modal verbs, such as ‘may’, ‘might’, ‘can’, ‘could’, ‘would’ and ‘will’.

All conditional sentences are in two parts and there are different forms of them.

Examples:

If a work hard, I shall pass the 11+.

If you cook eggs, they solidify.

If you took a year off, you could travel the world.

If I had taken an umbrella, I might not have got soaked.
