English Topic 15 - Active and passive sentences


The use of active and passive sentences commonly appears in 11 plus exams. It can also be referred to as the active or passive voice.

Active sentences are sentences where the subject completes the action of the verb.

Passive sentences are sentences where the subject is receives the action of the verb.

Examples:

Active: The batsman hit the cricket ball.

Passive: The cricket ball was hit by the batsman.

Active: Dad painted the new fence.

Passive: The new fence was painted by Dad.
