Scoring

Pass mark

The pass mark was 334 last year, taking into account standardisation.

Weighting

The final score is taken from all three papers combined. It is not necessary to 'pass' all three papers. A student may score low in one and high in another to bring their score up to the required pass rate.

Standardisation process

As with all standardisation processes, the age of the student does affect their final score. Younger students' scores are increased to compensate for the fact that they have not had as much time on the planet to learn new vocabulary etc. as older students.

Question Types

The exact type of verbal reasoning questions is unknown but some do seem to occur more often than others. It is suggested that students familiarise themselves with as many types as possible.

The exact type of non-verbal reasoning questions is also unknown but some do seem to occur more than others. It is suggested that students familiarise themselves with all types if possible.

Mathematics questions are intended to be set at what students should know at the end of Key Stage 2. Experience shows, however, that some questions would appear to be set at a higher level than this.

Application Procedure

Appeals Process

If a child narrowly misses the 11 plus pass mark then there may be grounds for an appeal. To appeal, there must be a valid reason why the child underperformed on the actual exam day.

See 11 plus appeals for more info. Here is an interview with a parent who made a successful appeal.
