Scoring
Pass mark
The pass mark is usually 121 after the scores have been standardised (See: Standardisation of scores). The maximum score is usually 141
Weighting
The final score is the highest standardised score achieved in the two verbal reasoning tests taken. Only the highest score counts - the other is totally disregarded.
Standardisation process
Nobody knows the exact formula used to standardise the score. However, the standardisation process does take into account the age of the child taking the test. The idea behind this is that a child born a year before another child should have a larger vocabulary by virtue of having been on earth for longer. Therefore, younger children's scores are increased to compensate for their age.
Question Types
The verbal reasoning exams in Buckinghamshire tend to contain 21 distinct question types. Although the exam format could in theory change, it has remained the same for many years.

Application Procedure
Appeals Process
If a child narrowly misses the 11 plus pass mark then there may be grounds for an appeal. To appeal, there must be a valid reason why the child underperformed on the actual exam day.
See 11 plus appeals for more info. Here is an interview with a parent who made a successful appeal.
