TOPIC: Vocabulary lists

Vocabulary lists 2 years, 2 months ago #2604

We are just setting out on the 11+ journey - people talk about having vocab lists and making index cards with words and meanings/opposites on - can anyone please give me guidance on where to start and what has worked for them!!

Have you seen the free vocabulary lists available on this site. If not, click on the "Study Aids" menu item. Also have a look at the chuckra playing cards www.chuckra.com/uk/shop/value-bundles/ch...d-3-pack-bundle.html

Yep - the vocabulary lists really helped me in my exams and the 11 plus playing cards are great for boosting your vocabulary as well.

However, in order to increase the range of your vocabulary further, you need to act for yourself. Whenever you see an unknown word in a book, newspaper article, etc., look it up in a dictionary and add it to your very own vocabulary list. Whenever you finish a test paper, go over it and look up all the words you don't know and add them to your list. Remember to ALWAYS have a good dictionary and thesaurus nearby.

In addition to that, Check out the Vocabulary Booster course found in the Online Testing area of this website. Take each test multiple times as each time you will get a different set of words.

I hope you have fun increasing your vocabulary!!

yming gets some 'Karma' from me.

A good post - making a list of new words and then going back to review them a few weeks later helps it stick in both your short term and long term memory.

Obviously reading as many challenging books as possible will help - and should be more enjoyable.
