TOPIC: The 2010 Register

Re:The 2010 Register 2 years ago #2741

Hi All

My Daughter is doing the 11+ 2010 we are in the Wirral near Liverpool, and can get NO information on the 11+ from the schools or the council - it is hard enough to do this as it is without having to understand the minefield

Anyway we did have a tutor sept last year who said that she can get her through, but thinks she will struggle I personaly think that the tutor cant make a decision on how well she will do 18mths in advance. And true to form daughter has now decided to go up 2 sets in both maths and English so is now in the top set for both......

Any way long and the short is, we are doing the extra tuition at home 1hr wed, 1hr sun, along side the SATS papers, tough times ahead but she understands, that there is no pressure and we havent said the pass or fail words we just explain to her that it gives us more choice of schools - and hope that it all works out in the end

My daughter is doing the 11+ this year, she's doing the Buckinghamshire paper which is VR. I had her do a few Bond papers in the summer to get an idea of what she was like, and what the questions were like myself.. Gosh I think I found some of them tough. Bigest insight was vocabulary which I assumed she knew.

Getting her to do extra work was also an obsticle. I found a reward system and its working quite well. A sticker for each session she has done with a bonus week at the end of the month where we roll a dice and multiply that weeks stickers by the bonus number for the week. When she achieved 50 stickers she got a bonus prize (football scarf!) and a week off studies. It seems to be working!! Bonus could be anything whatever motivates!

Hi Lizzie,

Yes, vocabulary is the X-Factor.

Meaning and a certain degree of spelling - the majority of the test is geared towards it and therefore it is vital to concentrate on this.

We printed off the nfer and Chuckra's own list of words in the dining room and used to go through them maybe discussing 3 or 4 words at dinner time (used to drive my wife potty).

It is no shock that those that get good scores are the children that are good readers.

My advice is to not to ask her to do loads and loads of tests - but to concentrate on a question type at each session. Chuckra offer many aids such as playing cards that will encourage learning without it feeling like a lecture.

.....I know I sound like a broken record but you've really got to encourage the reading of challenging books.

Good luck with it Lizzie - let us know how it's all going.

Andrea,

It sounds like you are going to have to make a nuisance of yourself.

You need to find out what the test or tests are based on. VR is very different from NVR and some authorities have one paper or as many as four.

I don't know your area - but my advice is find out what you are working towards and although the school and LA won't help, people here will.

Good luck.

Hi Angelina,

How many exams will your son be taking? Are you working with him at home or are you thinking of getting a tutor?

There is plenty of help on this website (practice papers / specific question type exercises / books etc) - what in particular did you need help with??

Good luck BTW.
