hi all can anyone pls advice on any other english (comprehension)that i could use with my son? comprehension is our weak area and i've noticed that the Essex English comp can be quite tough for a 10 year old.

The Bond assessment papers are good for both English and maths. You can also use the comprehension only papers for Bond. I write my own for my summer clubs and pupils as commercial resources are a bit thin at the correct level and style. There are papers available on this site.

The one that Chuckra sell are for the actual 11 Plus exam. If you want some free, harder comprehensions, try the Manchester Grammar School website. These are *NOT* 11 Plus format, but they can be used to improve the standard of a child's English. They are quite hard though. The pass mark is somewhere around 50%.

Thanks for responses to extra comprehension resources. had a look at the examination papers for manchester gr and yes they are challenging. the maths is also useful. we shall be busy for a while. i did however forget to mention that we are doing the bond but that too is very challenging for my boy. did not do very well with the 10-11 more and we're having to repeat most of the comprehension passages in the book. i finf that am having to force him to do some reading on a daily basis(when he doesn't suceed in slipping through my fingers) wish us luck. we're aiming to sit the essex test in Nov. thanks again

Did you try the Louise Staples papers? She is a specialist tutor for the Essex 11+. Her papers were designed especially for Essex 11+ preparation.
