Vocab for 11+ papers
Lots of people ask us how to increase their child's vocabulary. Really there is only one way and it cannot be done overnight.

Don't believe in magic

It often shocks me to see the claims made by 11 plus websites which tell you about their new magic software which promises to increase your child's vocabulary. Building a large vocabulary, unfortunately, takes time. There is no such thing as a single piece of software which will do the job in one hit. We include an online vocabulary builder on our website because it will help improve your child's vocabulary slightly, but mainly because it is also another way to exercise the brain.

Vocabulary used in the 11+ Tests

There are lists available on the internet of vocabulary found in past 11+ papers. Studying these lists serves little purpose except for gauging the overall level of vocabulary which tends to be used. There are probably hundreds of thousands of words of the required level which could appear in the next 11+ test, therefore it is fairly obvious that any list or piece of 11+ software isn't going to be the secret solution!

What is the secret?

The secret is to read. Read a lot and then read some more! It doesn't have to be limited to Harry Potter. Most children are interested in something, so find out what it is and make them read more about it. The internet is full of useful information, but always be sure to monitor which sites your child has access to.

Television is also a great source for boosting vocabulary. Obviously 'Eastenders' isn't going to do your child much good, but there are a great number of programs which can expose your child to new and useful words. Children learn new words more easily when they see or hear them in context. Getting children to learn word meanings from long lists of words rarely works. If you find words your child doesn't understand, try to find a sentence using that word so that they see a real life example of its usage.

Talk to your child. It is no secret that children from well educated families tend to develop a larger vocabulary because they are exposed to more challenging conversations. Children from families what dont speak proppa inglish is at a disadvantige innit. Our 11 plus students who attend private schools tend to have a noticeably larger vocabulary than those from state schools. This is just an unfortunate but true fact.

Happy reading!
