Mock Test Ranks

The main reason to attend a mock test day is to help overcome exam nerves, but of course many parents want to know the answer to the question 'Did my child pass?'. After the real exam you will receive a standardised score and the pass mark for your area. We made a decision this year not to provide standardised scores for the Chuckra Mock Test Days. Instead we give your child's Percentile Rank (I'll refer to it as Rank from now on).

Why no standardised scores this year?

We will not be providing standardised scores this year because they cause too much confusion and may be misleading. The exact method for standardisation is not publicly available in its entirety which means that any company providing standardised scores will be doing so using their own standardisation method and cannot guarantee it will match the method used by the real exam publisher.

So, we had to come up with a simple alternative method of letting parents know whether their child passed or not. This is where Rank comes in...

Please take a second to think about this...

There are only a certain number of grammar school places available at each school which means that only a certain number of top students get given a place.

From our experience, schools accept roughly the top 15% of students (this may vary slightly depending on the demand for places in your area). Rank easily lets you know if your child falls within this group.

Understanding Rank

Rank is a number between 0 and 100. It lets you know what percentage of students scored below your child's score. The top scoring child will have a Rank of 100 (100% of the other children scored below them) and the worst student will have a Rank of 0 (Nobody scored worse then they did). Please note that we are talking about percentage of students and not the actual number of students. Remember we said earlier that roughly the top 15% of students are likely to pass?

This means that if your child's Rank is 85 or above then they are likely to pass.
