| 11+Questions...don't forget the rest! |
Many parents think the best way to improve their child's 11+ results is to give them thousands of 11+ papers. While that may not be a bad thing, you must also think about other exercises which will give you the edge over the other students.
Professional footballers don't just play matches. They spend time in the gym building core strength. They practise on their own with just a football. Sometimes they'll practise with one other player and sometimes with the whole team. You must do the same thing with your 11 plus preparation. Don't just dive straight into 11 plus practice papers. Think about building core skills as well. Games are hugely important for building mental speed and short term memory - both vital for 11 plus success. We all know about the 11 plus playing cards buy now(subliminal typo - I wonder if they'll notice) and they are perfect for 11 plus preparation but there are other games you can play with your child too. Just as an example, why not play the spelling backwards game. Open up a book and go to a random page. Pick a word and spell it backwards to your child. See if they can work out which word you are spelling. Or, pick a word and ask them how many letters it contains. Don't let them use their fingers to count and make sure they answer as quickly as possible. These are just some ideas for you which we incorporate into our tuition sessions. I'm sure you can think of more. Remember, eleven plus tests can get a bit boring after a while so mix it up a bit and your child will be thankful. This sounds terribly cheesy but 11 plus preparation really can be fun if everybody gets involved. |
